About Matthew Brooks

Matthew prioritizes building a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship in order to work alongside clients to create meaningful, sustainable change. He uses a person-centered approach grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Reality Therapy, blending evidence-based practices with authenticity and an approachable sense of humor.

Matthew has particular expertise working with musicians, performers, and artists, informed by over 15 years as an orchestral conductor and music professor. While he earned an M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he also holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.), Master of Music (M.M.), and Bachelor of Music (B.M.), giving him a deep, lived understanding of the psychological demands of high-level training and performance. Many musicians and other high-achieving professionals seek therapy with Matthew for concerns related to professional stressors, perfectionism, comparison, burnout, identity, and the persistent sense of never being “good enough.” While rooted in the performing arts, these challenges often extend to clients in medicine, higher education, and other demanding professional fields.

In addition to his work with musicians, Matthew enjoys working with individuals and couples navigating life transitions, anxiety, relationship concerns, trauma, infidelity, sexual intimacy, and identity exploration. Many clients struggle with self-doubt or feel disconnected from themselves or others and want to feel more balanced, confident, and grounded in their relationships. Across all areas of practice, Matthew emphasizes collaboration, emotional insight, and practical skill-building to support growth and resilience.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and a justice-oriented clinician, Matthew is deeply committed to offering an affirming, inclusive, and culturally responsive therapeutic space. He is especially passionate about working with LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, as well as people from historically marginalized communities, ensuring that each client feels respected, valued, and safe.

Matthew recognizes the courage it takes to reach out for support, particularly when challenges have been carried alone. If you are ready to take that first step, please reach out to him by email, text, or phone.
